La Casa Hogar celebrates Yakima’s children and encourages them to stay and succeed in school with their 7th Annual Back2School Fiesta. The Fiesta, sponsored by Downtown Association of Yakima, will be Saturday, August 6th, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in front of the Seasons Performance Hall located at 101 N. Naches Avenue. The event features a backpack exchange where school-aged children are asked to bring $1 and a gently used backpack (if they have one); in return, they receive a new backpack. This year, the goal is 700 new backpacks. Memorial Hospital will also give out bike helmets to promote exercise, healthy living, and safe habits.
Back2School Fiesta invites local food vendors, businesses, and non-profit organizations to host booths for a small fee ($50, $40, and $25, respectively). Those hosting a booth are asked to bring school supplies to distribute to event attendees. La Casa will also host a “Kids’ Zone” with educational science, technology, engineering and math activities.
La Casa Hogar’s Executive Director, Laura Armstrong, states, “Many of Yakima’s families may not be able to afford going back to school shopping. Children return to school and get mocked; I know I’ve experienced that. I think we can all relate. By giving children new school supplies and backpacks, our community shows our Valley’s children that they have a community of business owners, non-profits, libraries, large companies, etc., who are all cheering them on as they pursue their education. We want children to stay in school and we believe equipping them with the supplies helps them do that. As they say, ‘it takes a village.”‘
