La Casa Hogar Reaches A New Level Of Success
Two Students Become
U.S. Citizens
What started out as just a conversation turned into something much more.  Duran—a business owner and LCH student—approached our staff and requested that we offer a citizenship class..  We encouraged Duran to round up women for the class, and within one day, fifteen students were registered.

Spring 2010 was the first quarter we offered the citizenship class.  Of the fifteen students who participated,  five sent the application during the ten-week class, two became US Citizens in June, three are waiting for a response, and the rest have set the goal of completing the process within a year.

A new citizenship class—offered to men and women—began on July 26th. It will be taught at First Baptist Church: 515 E. Yakima Ave., Yakima.  For more information, call (509) 457-5058.

Summer Fun For Everyone!
La Casa Hogar focuses on family fun during our summer quarter. Our participants and their school-age children have been very busy! We offer classes in arts and crafts and cooking, and take field trips to explore new places while learning to ride the bus.  Many have never used the bus, so this teaches both moms and children how to ride the bus with confidence.

  •   To Alfonso Garcia, Velia Lewis and the staff from OIC  for providing our summer participants with a CPR class.
  •  To Joan & Jim Neubauer, Lilia Medina, Sara Gonzalez and Cecilia Gonzalez for sharing their talents and teaching a class in our summer program.
  •  To Angie Pullido for her participation in the Cultural Insight class.
  • To Wal-Mart for their signature sponsorship in our upcoming Kermes. It’s the second year in a row!

Doctors Gain Cultural Insight
La Casa Hogar Teaches
Mexican Cultural Class
The goal of this class was to mutually explore the cultural intersection of Mexican immigrant families and American medical services.  The class focused on three core common values; open communication, family and respect. Teaching tools included role playing, sharing personal stories and conversation about Mexican home remedies.

One resident had this to say about the class: “I thought it was very helpful to see how the interaction with patients is perceived.  I enjoyed the role playing and conversation, and learned a lot about the Mexican culture.”
