The Heart of Our Home Cookbook - El Corazón de Nuestro
Hogar
The
Heart of Our Home expresses their gift of cooking and offers
a taste of their stories. Each woman's favorite recipe represents
seasonal and family celebrations, life's struggles, and the simplicity
of the universal joy of a home-cooked meal eaten and shared with
those we love.
The Heart of Our Home is our student's and staff's commitment
and contribution toward achieving the goal to own our La Casa home
where Hispanic women and children gather to learn English and prepare
for their future. You too are invited to join in the life of La
Casa Hogar, where you will find home, and be nourished by friendship,
family and the delicious meal of hope. Welcome to the table, everyone.

Helen Jewett-Shields & Eloisa Gonzalez,
La Casa Hogar cook and student |
We are pleased to dedicate The Heart of Our Home
to Helen Jewett-Shields. During her visits to La Casa Hogar
she has expressed how much she enjoys the women who gather here
and our home. Her generous and gracious financial gift has made
it possible for us to own our home. It is with deep appreciation
that we dedicate The Heart of Our Home to Helen, a
beautiful caring woman, who makes an extraordinary difference
for people in our community. |
The outstanding collaboration of volunteers Amy Peters and Rob
Prout with production, design and photography and our generous underwriters
Western Materials, Abbott Printing and Catholic Credit Union make
it possible for you to enjoy The Heart of Our Home. This
book was created by the English as a Second Language students, and
La Casa Hogar staff. The writings reflect the variety of educational
levels and English abilities of our students. The class was taught
by Terri Buchanan, Yakima Valley Community College instructor, and
the project was coordinated by staff member Luz Monroy. The idea
was inspired by staff member and Heritage University intern, Gloria
Garza. Welcome to our table.
The Heart of Our Home cookbook contains 35 recipes, in
both English and Spanish. Selected recipes include the photograph
and personal story of the La Casa Hogar student or staff member
which submitted the recipe to the cookbook.
